Every ride since 2021, and what it saved.

Training, races, the Mestre–Padova commute and four rides to conferences, from Strava. Amber lines are commutes, green lines are trips to conferences, blue is everything else. CO₂ is counted only where the bike replaced another way of travelling.

CO₂ avoided

—kg CO₂e

Compared with the way I would otherwise have travelled.

Padova and Trento: without the bike I would have gone by
Vienna, Maastricht and London: I would have gone by

Emissions of each way of making the same journey, in kg CO₂e. Bold marks the option chosen above.

What counts

  • Commutes between home and the Department of Mathematics in Padova recorded on Strava, one way or both.
  • The outbound rides to NetSci 2023, CS2Italy 2025 (out and back to Verona), NetSci 2025 and Complexity72h 2026.
  • Training rides and races replace nothing, so they count for zero.
  • Fuel and electricity for the alternatives; building the vehicles is left out on every side.

Food for the bike

Only the energy beyond a normal day (about 3,500 kcal, training included) counts. Commuting replaces training, so it needs none. For each conference ride, the extra distance is the trip minus my average daily distance over the previous year, for the same number of days. Calories per km come from Strava (the trip's own figure where every leg has one, otherwise my median of 25 kcal/km). Ride food is pasta, bread, sugar and gummies, so every extra calorie is counted as an equal mix of wheat, cane sugar and beet sugar: 0.67 kg CO₂e per 1,000 kcal.

Train, car and plane

Every alternative comes from EcoPassenger, the UIC calculator built by ifeu, for the real route between stations (Venezia Mestre to Padova, Trento, Verona, Wien Hbf, Maastricht and London St Pancras) : CO₂ per passenger, a mid-size diesel car driven alone, flights with the climate factor for effects at altitude and the drive to and from the airport, trains on the national electricity mix. One commute leg is 1.4 kg by train and 6.5 kg by car.
